British Open 2017: Updated leaderboard after Round 3
By John Buhler
Round 3 of the 2017 British Open has ended. Let’s take a look at what the top of the leaderboard looks like heading into Sunday at The Open Championship.
We are one day away from giving the iconic Claret Jug to somebody at the 2017 British Open. The Open Championship has been delightful thus far at Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, England. While the weather was horrible on Friday, good PGA Tour golfing returned during Round 3 on Saturday.
After 54 holes, American Jordan Spieth has extended his lead over second-place Matt Kuchar to three strokes. Spieth shot five under par on Saturday to improve to 11 under on the tournament. Kuchar is still within striking distance at an awesome eight under after shooting four under par on Saturday.
In a two-way tie for third place are Canadian Austin Connelly and 2017 U.S. Open Champion Brooks Koepka at -5. Either player can still win the Claret Jug on Sunday, but will need several things to go their way in Round 4.
Rounding out the top 10 are Branden Grace and Hideki Matsuyama in fifth place at -4. Grace shot a ridiculous 62 on Saturday to come out of nowhere to finish at -4. It was the best single round in major tournament history.
After those two is a four-way tie for seventh at -7. Those golfers in seventh place are Dustin Johnson, last year’s champion Henrik Stenson, Chan Kim and Rafael Cabrera-Bello at -3. All four of those golfers have played well through 54 holes, but will need a miracle to hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday.
Here is the leaderboard after Round 3 at the 2017 Open Championship.
