Round 3 of the 2017 British Open at Royal Birkdale was fantastic. Here are all the best highlights from Saturday of the 2017 Open Championship.
Day 3 of the 2017 British Open is in the books. The weather cooperated on Saturday after a miserable Round 2 on Friday at Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, England. We are only one round away from crowning a new Open Champion.
The guy that has been brilliant through 54 holes has been Jordan Spieth. He has led all three days thus far at the 146th playing of the Open Championship. He was in a three-way tie with Matt Kuchar and Brooks Koepka at -5 on Thursday.
Spieth still managed to extend his lead, as he shot one under on Friday to improve -6 on the tournament. That put him two strokes ahead of Kuchar at -4 and three ahead of Koepka at -3. Spieth didn’t stop on Saturday from extending his lead either. He shot five under in Round 3 to improve to -11 on the tournament.
Kuchar shot four under to improve to -8 on the week, but is now three strokes back of Spieth for the Claret Jug. Koepka shot two under to get back to -5 in the tournament. He is tied for third with Austin Connelly, but is now six strokes back of Spieth with only 18 holes remaining.
Barring any sort of collapse by Spieth or a huge Sunday run by Kuchar, this Claret Jug will belong to the American golf prodigy. It would be his third career major and his first coming at The Open Championship.
It should be noted that South Africa’s Branden Grace broke a major tournament record by shooting an otherworldly 62 (-8) on Saturday to improve to -4. He may not win the British Open, but what a round for the guy.
