What is a Punjabi Prison match and what can we expect to see at WWE Battleground on Sunday night between Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton in their WWE Championship match?

For the third time in WWE history and the first time in a decade, the Battleground pay-per-view will feature a Punjabi Prison match.

In the main event of the show, Jinder Mahal will defend the WWE Championship against Randy Orton inside of the Punjabi Prison, marking the first time that the most prestigious title in WWE will be on the line in this type of match.

But, what exactly is a Punjabi Prison match? Well, Mahal and the Singh Brothers did a solid job of explaining how the match will work on this past edition of SmackDown Live Tuesday night.

The rules of the match are simple: there are no rules. There’s no pinfalls. There’s no submissions. There are no disqualifications or count-outs in this match. The only way to win the match and either retain or win the WWE Championship is to crawl out of the one of the four doors surrounding the inside structure and then climbing out of the second structure or climbing out of both structures before your opponent does.

Like the Singh Brothers noted, each of the four doors surround the inside structure will only be open for 60 seconds when a competitor calls for a door to open and then they’ll be shut for good. So, if you don’t exit through one of the doors before it closes and all four doors are locked, you have to go over the top of both structures to win the match.

Sunday provides an intriguing aspect of the ring being surrounded by the bamboo structures. The Singh Brothers have played a big role in Mahal’s matches during his reign as champion, so it’ll be interesting to see how the champion fares on his own at Battleground.
