Penn State kicker Joey Julius is no longer with the program, we found out on Monday during Big Ten Media Days.

Every college football season we have viral sensations, and there’s no doubt that last year Penn State kicker Joey Julius was one of those. The kicker made a name for himself not just for someone his size playing the position that he was playing, but because he was never afraid to get down and dirty with some rough contact.

Remember this?

Yes, Julius definitely made a name for himself last season, but he won’t be doing so this coming season. We found out on Monday, during Big Ten Media Days, that Julius has left the football program in Happy Valley.

Hopefully, everything is okay with the young man from Pennsylvania. While he was the butt of a lot of jokes due to his size, we learned last year that Julius suffered from depression and an eating disorder. This past May, Julius announced that he was taking some time away from the team to seek the necessary treatment.

Julius was quite the entertaining character to watch on the football field, but as we’re always reminded in some way or another, there are aspects of life that are bigger than the game. Julius was obviously battling through a lot for a young man his age, and taking care of those issues are way more important right now than kicking off and laying some lumber on the football field.

Last season during Penn State’s Big Ten Championship season, Julius did not handle the field goal or extra point duties, rather just handling the kickoffs while Tyler Davis took the scoring job. But in 2015, Julius did make 10 of 12 field goal attempts and was 20-of-24 on extra points.

Best wishes to Julius in the future and he works around all of this, now without the distraction of football.
