Yankees fall victim to rare run-scoring triple play against Reds (Video)
We’ve seen a couple triple plays this season, but it’s not every day that a team still scores on one like the Yankees did on Tuesday night.
The New York Yankees have gone 6-5 since the All-Star Break, and find themselves two games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. If they want to catch up and make a run in the second half of the season, however, they may want to avoid doing what they did on Tuesday night.
In their game against the Cincinnati Reds at home, the team had the bases loaded with no outs in a scoreless game on both ends. They were in an ideal spot, and nothing could possibly go wrong with a clean scoreboard.
However, disaster struck pretty quickly, as the team had a less-than-ideal finish to their seemingly perfect situation. With Todd Frazier at the plate for his first at-bat in pinstripes in front of his new home crowd, he grounded to the shortstop and finished with a pretty bad result.
Frazier’s grounder caught Didi Gregorius in a bad spot, as he couldn’t decide whether to head to third base or go back to second where he started. Eventually, the mistake cost the team as we got a 6-3-4 triple play with a pickle caught in between.
Triple plays aren’t all that rare, and we saw the Yankees’ AL East rival Red Sox fall victim to one just two months ago to the Baltimore Orioles. However, what’s a little less common was the Yankees still adding a run to the scoreboard in the process.

It wasn’t all bad for New York in the end, as they broke a 0-0 tie with the triple play, and Frazier technically drove in a run in his first home at-bat with the Yankees. Just maybe next time, he won’t want to use a triple play to get some support on the board for his pitcher.
