MLB trade rumors: Boston Red Sox acquire Eduardo Nunez

The Boston Red Sox bolstered their infield by acquiring Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants Tuesday.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Boston Red Sox agreed to a trade that will land them Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants.

The first hint that Nunez was on his way out could be found during the Giants’ game Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nunez was giving emotional hugs to his teammates in the dugout.

The Giants will receive two minor league pitchers in return, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nunez is a good fit for the Red Sox and is in the middle of the best season of his career. As of Tuesday, Nunez is hitting .307 with four home runs and 29 RBI. Furthermore, in 75 appearances for the Giants this season, Nunez has committed just eight errors.

Boston’s biggest struggle has been at third base this season. Both Brock Holt and Pablo Sandoval have proven themselves incapable at the position. Sandoval was recently released and Holt has dealt with injuries all season.

The Red Sox recently called up Rafael Devers to try something new. However, Devers is just 20 years old and lacks experience. He barely got to play much in Triple-A before being brought up to the majors.

Boston looks on their way to the playoffs and hope to compete for a pennant. They currently sit 1.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East. The loser of the division will most likely receive a Wild Card bid into the playoffs.

The Red Sox need a more solid third base option than the young Devers or the inconsistent Deven Marrero and Tzu-Wei Lin.

Nunez can be counted on both in the field and at the plate. He could potentially be a key piece in the Red Sox reaching another World Series.
