15. David Seaman

David Seaman combined bad facial hair with a terrible haircut, just as Lalas did. The Englishman may have opted for a more sober mustache, but it was still a horrendous choice.

In fact, Seaman’s ‘tache pre-dated his bad hair. Big Dave was rocking the old soup strainer back in the days when Liverpool were winning league titles. Yeah. That long ago. Though in fairness, that was closer in time to the ’70s than the present day is, so perhaps it was fair enough.

Where the Arsenal legend went wrong, though, was in the mid-to-late-90s. Like many a young English man at the time, Seaman had a center-parting. It was a little too long at the back, as he displayed when saving a penalty at Euro ’96, but it wasn’t too bad as soccer haircuts go.

Seaman’s problem was that he let the hair grow. And grow. And grow until he had a ponytail down his back as you can see in the photo here. His mid-90s effort was reasonably in style for the time. Ponytails on men have never been in fashion, though, and they certainly weren’t as the new millennium dawned.

What made it even stranger was that Seaman dispensed with both the long hair and mustache after he retired. It was as if he was some kind of soccer playing Samson. “I’ve retired now, so I don’t need my special powers for soccer any more,” he must’ve thought. If only he’d had such clarity of thought regarding his hair during his career.
