14. Jason Lee

There’s every chance you haven’t heard of Jason Lee. In a career which spanned over two decades, the journeyman forward played for 18 different clubs. There’s every chance you haven’t heard of a lot of the clubs, too, unless you follow lower league English soccer.

With a record of 125 goals in 621 club games, Lee wasn’t overly prolific. He would probably not be remembered now, had a comedy soccer show on British TV not mercilessly lampooned his haircut.

‘Fantasy Football League’ was a popular show which aired on the BBC in the mid-90s. The presenters, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, relentlessly mocked Lee for his hairstyle which they described as looking like a pineapple.

“He’s got a pineapple, on his head” was their chant, to the tune of “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands.” This eventually spread to the terraces of grounds where Lee was playing, and everyone had a good old laugh at his ridiculous haircut.

Except Lee himself, that is. As he told the BBC in 2007, when discussing the attention his hairstyle received:

“I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t affect me. It coincided with a lack of form, which any player can have, and it grew to the extent where it was affecting people around me.”

The mocking that Lee received nearly forced him to quit the game entirely. Now granted it’s a terrible haircut, but did he deserve such punishment?

Had he worked at a desk all day, he might have managed to keep his dreadlocks in check. Soccer players tend to run around a lot though, and this caused the hair to form the unfortunate pineapple. If nothing else, Lee, Baddiel and Skinner have ensured no player will ever risk having this dreadful haircut again. We should all be thankful.
