11. Rudi Voller

It was inevitable that this rundown would include at least one mullet. It was unlikely to pass by without offering up a perm either. Both styles were soccer staples during the ’80s, after all. If a player was particularly hapless in the hair department, they combined the pairing to devastatingly ugly effect. The true artisan would also apply a mustache, as the cherry on a thoroughly upsetting cake.

Step forward, Rudi Voller. The man should be a legend of the game (of soccer, and not just bad hair). The German is one of only three men to reach the World Cup final as both a player and a manager. That’s no mean feat, not least when considering how average his national team were when he steered them to the final in 2002.

Voller also won the Champions League with Marseille, and scored in three World Cups. One of these goals was in the 1986 final, but he will be best remembered for his exploits at Italia ’90.

No, not being part of the West Germany side who won the tournament (though that always looks nice on your CV). Voller will be forever remembered for his scuffle with Frank Rijkaard, which resulted in both players being sent off. The most memorable part of the contretemps involved the Dutchman spitting into the German’s luxurious mane.

A comment on the appalling nature of Voller’s hair? Probably not, as Rijkaard hasn’t fared too well on that front down the years himself. It seems that the Dutch defender simply went berserk. Can’t help thinking Rudi’s ghastly locks provoked him somehow, though.
