Los Angeles Dodgers: Manny Ramirez in a three-way deal, 2008

  • Dodgers get: Manny Ramirez
  • Pittsburgh Pirates get: Andy LaRoche, Brian Morris (from Dodgers), Brandon Moss, Craig Hansen (from Red Sox)
  • Red Sox get: Jason Bay (from Pirates)

What a doozy this trade was! By the trade deadline of the 2008 season, Manny Ramirez had officially worn out his welcome in Boston and the Red Sox wanted a new left fielder. A three-way trade fell into their lap and they were able to ship Ramirez to Los Angeles while bringing in Jason Bay.

The Dodgers obviously won the trade by a landslide (although Bay was pretty solid in Boston). Ramirez was an immediate sensation in Los Angeles, wearing number 99 and letting his freak flag fly. In his 53 games with the Dodgers to end the 2008 season, Ramirez batted .396/.489/.743 with 17 homers and 53 RBI. He carried it over to the postseason, going 13-for-25 with two doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI before the Dodgers lost in the NLCS.

After the year, the Dodgers gave Ramirez a three-year deal for $45 million. What followed could not have been predicted by anyone in the front office. Ramirez got popped for PEDs early in the 2009 season. He came back to play 104 games and hit .290/.418/.531 with 19 home runs and 63 RBI. The bloom was off the rose, however. The Dodgers traded Ramirez to the White Sox in 2010 and his career ended in disgrace when he got knocked for PEDs again in 2011 while trying to keep his MLB career alive with the Tampa Bay Rays.
