Ravens sign Arena League QB David Olson over Colin Kaepernick

The Baltimore Ravens are adding a quarterback after the Joe Flacco injury. No, it’s not Colin Kaepernick, it’s David Olson out of the Arena League.

It was widely reported that Ravens’ starting quarterback, Joe Flacco, has been dealing with a back issue since his lifting session recently. Although the time that Flacco will be out has varied, it seems to be a minimum of one week.

At the same time, Baltimore opened training camp today and only has two other quarterbacks on the roster. It’s Ryan Mallet and Dustin Vaughan, who are the other camp arms behind Flacco.

It was also added that QB Colin Kaepernick could be in consideration for a training camp spot with the injury to Flacco. It made sense, as John Harbaugh is the head coach of the Ravens — with family ties to Jim Harbaugh. The offensive coordinator of the Ravens is Greg Roman — the same playcaller that Kaepernick had in San Francisco.

Was this the most logical spot for Kaepernick to find a job? Probably — but the Ravens and GM Ozzie Newsome chose to go another route, signing QB David Olson to a contract.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Ravens are adding the ex-Arena League quarterback who played for the Kansas City Phantoms. Rapoport also added that Olson played for the younger Harbaugh at Stanford. The Michigan head coach gave rave reviews of Olson that led to him getting the job.

Olson played for the Phantoms, but went to school at Stanford and Clemson. He stands tall at 6-foot-3, weighing 225 pounds. Is he going to be a serious threat to make the roster? Definitely not; he’s the fourth quarterback on the roster and would have to blow it out of the park.

He’s likely to just be a camp arm, who is there as another quarterback on the roster.
