Honda Indy 200 results: Josef Newgarden wins consecutive races
Josef Newgarden stole a Honda Indy 200 victory from teammate Will Power to win back to back IndyCar races. Here are the complete Honda Indy 200 results.
Josef Newgarden is the Verizon IndyCar Series’ new frontrunner after winning Sunday’s Honda Indy 200 for his second victory in as many races. It was also the Team Penske newcomer’s first win at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and a valuable result catapulting him to the top of the points for the first time in his career.
Newgarden took the lead from pole sitter Will Power with a gutsy last-second move on Lap 13 of 90, and at the halfway point of the Honda Indy 200 was in front by more than six seconds. But that lead was obliterated when Ed Jones spun out alone on Lap 67 for the day’s only caution.
However, Dale Coyne Racing’s questionable decision to leave the lapped car of Esteban Gutierrez second in line provided a buffer for Newgarden on the restart. Gutierrez not only stayed between the two leaders but also locked up his brakes when the race resumed, thwarting Power’s chance at retaking the lead.
“What a waste of a good race it could’ve been,” Power said afterward in his TV interview.
Meanwhile, championship leader Scott Dixon battled his car all day, including complaints of a possible mechanical problem on Lap 30 that forced an early second pit stop and a third pit stop plagued by an equipment failure.
Dixon did salvage a 9th place finish, so the Honda Indy 200 was not a total loss for the four-time titleholder. But the issues cost him the championship lead, as Josef Newgarden’s victory also put him out in front on the overall IndyCar leaderboard with four races remaining.
