Los Angeles to host 2028 Olympic Games
The world’s largest international sports competition is coming back to the United States.
The city of Los Angeles has been awarded the honor of hosting the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
Los Angeles will host the Olympics for the third time in the history of the games (1932 and 1984 being the other years) and the nation’s first hosting opportunity since the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Los Angeles Times was the first to report the story, citing a source close to the negotiation.
The Los Angeles team bidding for the upcoming games agreed to wait four years in order for Paris, France to host the international event in 2024.
France hasn’t hosted an Olympic Games since the nation hosted the Winter Olympics in Albertville in 1992. Paris being awarded the 2024 games marks 100 years since the iconic European city last hosted.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the process of selecting two nation’s in that fashion is unusual. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said the competition between Paris and Los Angeles required “bold new solutions” in a presentation last month in Switzerland, according to CBS News.
An official decision by the Olympic Committee is expected to be announced later on Monday.
Pyeongchang, South Korea will host next year’s winter games followed by the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020 and the Winter Olympics in 2022 in Beijing. Both Paris and Los Angeles will host the Summer Olympic Games. It’s unclear at this time which city will be awarded the honor of hosting the Winter Olympic Games in 2026.
