MLB Trade Rumors: New York Yankees acquire Sonny Gray
The New York Yankees made a blockbuster move to bolster their rotation.
According to Jack Curry of YES Network, the New York Yankees will acquire pitcher Sonny Gray from the Oakland Athletics. In return, the Athletics will receive Jorge Mateo, Dustin Fowler. and James Kaprielian, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
In addition, the Yankees will receive $1.5 million in international bonus money.
This is a solid haul for the Yankees, but Sonny Gray is definitely the crown jewel of this trade. He will most likely be immediately slotted in as the second starter in New York’s rotation.
Additionally, the Yankees should be happy that they don’t have to part ways with some of their top prospects, such as Gleyber Torres and Clint Frazier.
The Yankees are priming themselves for a deep playoff run. They currently sit atop the American League East. However, they lead the struggling Boston Red Sox by just 1/2 game. Whoever loses the division will most likely earn a wild card berth into the playoffs, however.
The Yankees now have a very strong rotation that looks ready for the playoffs. The front office wasn’t sure about this before. With Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino, CC Sabathia, and now Gray, New York has one of the strongest starting rotations of any team vying for the playoffs.

This has been a busy day for the Oakland Athletics. With their season likely over, they dealt infielder Adam Rosales to the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday.
This deal closes the options for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will likely be pushing hard for Yu Darvish as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches.
Gray can be a big piece of New York’s rotation for years to come, as well. He is signed through 2019, which is part of what has made him such a hot commodity as the trade deadline has approached.
