Verizon IndyCar Series standings after Honda Indy 200
Josef Newgarden has moved atop the Verizon IndyCar Series championship standings after his second consecutive race win in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.
For the first time in two months, the Verizon IndyCar Series has a new championship leader. Josef Newgarden’s win at the Honda Indy 200 also gave him first place in the points, as incoming leader Scott Dixon’s bad day tumbled him to third place.
Newgarden’s teammate Helio Castroneves remains in second spot on the leaderboard, while 2016 titleholder Simon Pagenaud has slid from second to fourth since Road America. But all four Team Penske drivers remain within the top 5 overall.
Graham Rahal’s podium finish at the Honda Indy 200 was good enough to keep him lurking at the door. Rahal continues to sit sixth and is just six points behind the man who held him off on Sunday, Will Power.
Perhaps the biggest loser leaving Mid-Ohio is Dale Coyne Racing’s Ed Jones. Not only did he spin out in Sunday’s race for a dismal finish in that specific event, he’s fallen out of the top 10 over the last two races and now is 14th in the IndyCar standings. For someone who should have been Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, Jones has not had things go his way in the second half of the season.
