19. Mayweather isn’t undefeated on Dancing with the Stars

In 2007, prior to his fight against Ricky Hatton, Floyd Mayweather Jr. participated in ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Mayweather was paired with professional dancer Karina Smirnoff, finishing in ninth place after getting eliminated following a paso doble routine for which they received a score of 23 out of 30, which ironically ended up being their highest tally through four weeks of competition.

Here’s what Mayweather had to say after getting eliminated from the show, courtesy of ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael:

"“It was marvelous just being here, just to get to this plateau,” Mayweather told Bergeron when asked how he felt about his experience on the series. “For all the fans that supported me, to everybody behind the scenes, I really appreciate it. We had a great time.”"

As the piece notes, the early exit may have been a blessing in disguise for Mayweather, as it enabled him to focus exclusively on Hatton, who Mayweather would go on to stop in 10 rounds. The Hatton bludgeoning would be Mayweather’s final fight before a nearly two-year retirement. Although Dancing with the Stars is superficial entertainment at best, it was surprising to see an athlete as gifted, agile and coordinated as Mayweather exit the competition so early (before Mark Cuban, no less).

In 2016, TMZ caught up with Smirnoff, who offered a theory about what went wrong with Mayweather: “I think it’s a combination of footwork, arm work, bodywork, rhythm,” she said. Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be untouchable in the ring, but he can’t claim to be “TBE” of ballroom dancing.
