Florida State suffered a loss on Friday when it was announced that wide receiver Da’Vante Phillips will be suspended indefinitely after his arrest.

The Florida State Seminoles haven’t had a lot of success keeping players out of trouble off of the field over the years, and another victim was added to the list on Friday when Da’Vante Phillips was suspended.

Phillips, a third-year wide receiver for the Seminoles, was arrested on Thursday for four counts of fraud and one count of grand theft, and the college apparently acted quickly to impose some form of punishment on Phillips for the charges.

According to the Tampa Bay TimesPhillips bought four money orders totaling $485.89 back in January, and then proceeded to change them with “white out or another substance” to read $700 each.

The school suspended Phillips indefinitely, and released some comments on the incident in a statement, saying head coach Jimbo Fisher wouldn’t be talking about the issue going forward.

“Florida State Head Coach Jimbo Fisher announced today that junior receiver Da’Vante Phillips has been indefinitely suspended from the football team in accordance with athletic department policy,” the statement read. “He will have no further comment at this time.”

Phillips wasn’t exactly a star receiver or big playmaker for Florida State in his first two years with the program, as he made five catches for 30 yards in his two seasons on the Seminoles roster. The loss wouldn’t be a huge blow to Florida State statistically, however, the team is in need of receivers willing to step up in their depth chart, and they’re running out of bodies on that end.

Luckily, the team has experience dealing with issues like this, as their star quarterback and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Jameis Winston went through a similar problem with his controversy surrounding shoplifting crab legs when he was at Florida State. Maybe the quarterback can give Phillips a call and give him some advice on crisis management.
