What would top soccer players be worth in Adam Smith’s barter economy?
Harry Kane: 221B Baker Street
Harry Kane has allowed Tottenham to be the most consistently good club in the Premier League over the last two seasons. Also, he managed to take home the Golden Boot this season despite missing five games to injury. That’s pretty impressive for a 23-year-old.
Yet, he doesn’t seem to get enough respect from anyone other than Tottenham fans. Rarely does anyone include him in their discussions of the greatest strikers alive. He was regularly overlooked for international duties early in his career and nobody seems to be knocking down Tottenham’s door to try to pry him away.
If anyone ever did try to sign England’s great hope, they’d have to sign over the deed to 221B Baker Street. It’s only fair to trade a British icon of yesteryear for Kane, the British icon of tomorrow. The famous London property is little more than a tourist attraction these days, and kind of a lame one at that. It’s just a gift shop with some deerstalker caps outside.
The real value of the property is in its potential. If someone more ambitious owned Sherlock Holmes’ residence, imagine what they could do. They could set up a detective-themed escape room. Or they could hire actors to play Holmes, Dr. Watson and Mrs. Hudson and have them act out scenes from the books while people wander in and out.
It would be worth exactly one Harry Kane to make it happen.
