The Miami Dolphins are interested in signing Jay Cutler to replace Ryan Tannehill. But is Cutler interested in a reunion with his former offensive coordinator Adam Gase?

The Miami Dolphins are in quite the pickle after Ryan Tannehill’s injury. Worse than initially thought, the timetable for his return is uncertain. While Matt Moore is a perfectly capable backup, he struggled at times while replacing Tannehill last season. With the franchise quarterback in injury limbo, the Dolphins have discussed signing recently retired quarterback Jay Cutler.

Gase and Cutler have experience working together. The former Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos quarterback had an excellent season in 2015. Gase was his offensive coordinator during that season, so the fit makes sense. Cutler is familiar with him and the head coach is familiar with his former signal caller.

In a recent interview, Gase suggested the interest between the two parties is mutual.

“He was interested,” Gase said, via the Palm Beach Post. “I think he’s trying to figure out everything. I don’t think he looked at our situation. He was surprised and he has things to work through.”

Cutler recently retired to become a broadcaster, following in the footsteps of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. He seems to have the personality to be a broadcaster and is very knowledgeable about the game. With a little bit of tutoring, Cutler could be a valuable member to any broadcast crew.

But at the end of the day, he’s an athlete. Cutler lives and breathes football, and playing it again has to be a tempting offer for him. Especially if it’s for someone who he’s very comfortable with and he had success with.

Until the extent of Tannehill’s injury is more concrete, don’t expect the Dolphins to be aggressive in pursuing Cutler. He’ll reportedly want to be paid like a starting quarterback, so a backup job seems out of the question.
