Taking a look at the playoff format for the PGA Championship to see what happens if we get a classic that needs more than 72 holes to decide a winner.

The fourth major of the season, the PGA Championship feels like it’s overlooked at times in the overall golf landscape. Obviously no one is ever going to forget about it. It is the PGA Championship after all. However, it just sometimes seems to be on a lesser plane than The Masters, U.S. Open and British Open. Regardless, it’s the fourth major and holds a ton of clout.

As such, everyone is watching as the 2017 PGA Championship heads to Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC. The first round will tee off on Thursday, Aug. 10 and the traditional host for the Wells Fargo Championship will have a big show to put on. In the meantime, defending champion Jimmy Walker will look to get back to that form.

With that being said, many golf fans are looking for two guys in particular coming into the fourth major: Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy. Spieth is coming off a dominant British Open win, and now only needs the PGA for the career grand slam. McIlroy, meanwhile, would love a PGA on his belt and has been a beast at Quail Hollow in his career.

If you ask most people, this major is going to come down to those two, and could go to the wire. Should that happen, we could see one of the most high-profile playoffs in golf history. But what exactly are the playoff rules at the PGA Championship?

The playoff format for the PGA Championship is quite simple. It’s all based on a three-hole aggregate. If two players are tied after 72 holes, they’ll play No. 16, 17 and 18 and the lowest score through those wins. Should they still be tied, it then becomes sudden death.
