It was only a matter of time before Charles Oakley got on the court in the BIG3. The player coach for the Killer 3s will make his debut on Saturday.

Though he may have found himself in the news for all the wrong reasons in February at Madison Square Garden, Charles Oakley will hopefully be in the news for all the right reasons on Saturday at Staples Center. That’s because the player coach for the Killer 3s in the BIG3 will be making his debut on the hardwood.

BIG3 teammate Stephen Jackson had hinted that Oakley could be suiting up for the Killer 3s earlier this week. This team already has a great physical presence with the likes of Jackson and forward Reggie Evans. Why not put the Oak Tree out there and see what happens?

Oakley spent 19 years in the NBA out of Virginia Union University. He was an All-Star in 1994-95 when he was with the New York Knicks. Oakley spent 10 of his 19 NBA seasons playing for the Knicks from 1988 to 1998. Overall, Oakley would play for five NBA teams, including the Chicago Bulls and the Toronto Raptors.

Putting Oakley out there on the hardwood at 53 years old might seem a bit gimmicky, but frankly, that’s part of the allure of the BIG3 in general. Keep in mind that the league will be competing with the NFL preseason through the rest of August. If your favorite NFL team isn’t playing, definitely check out Oakley and the Killers 3s on tape delay Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. ET on FS1.

The BIG3 will take some time to fully get off the ground, but the league has made more good decisions than bad ones. People love basketball and 3-on-3 will be an Olympic sport before you know it. How many times do you get to see Oakley hoop it up on television? Exactly. Tune in.
