Roberto Aguayo waived by Buccaneers after bad preseason game

In what might be the worst second-round pick of all time, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have parted ways with kicker Roberto Aguayo on Saturday afternoon.

For as great of a kicker as he was in the ACC for the Florida State Seminoles, Roberto Aguayo was anything but that for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after getting picked in the second round of the draft. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, “The Bucs have released former 2nd round pick Roberto Aguayo after [Friday] night’s misses.”

Aguayo missed two field goals in Friday night’s preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-12. Tampa Bay selected Aguayo with the No. 59 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Florida State. Known as Mr. Perfect in college, Aguayo only managed to make 71.0 percent of his field goals in his rookie year.

Had Aguayo been as consistent as he was with the Seminoles, Tampa Bay could have ended its nearly decade long playoff drought last year. Tampa Bay went 9-7 and misses out on the NFC Playoffs by virtue of the NFL’s tie breaking procedures with the Detroit Lions.

The Buccaneers brought in former New York Jets kicker Nick Folk to compete with Aguayo for the starting job. Folk had been solid with the Jets before arriving in Tampa Bay. All his arrival did was put unwanted pressure on the struggling second-year kicker.

Aguayo is still young at 23 years of age. He will get another opportunity to kick in the NFL at some point. However, his disastrous last year plus with the Buccaneers will likely prevent NFL teams from using a day two pick on a kicker in an upcoming draft.

There have been some terrible picks in the history of NFL Drafts, but this is right up there with one of the worst ever coming out of the second round.
