Southampton face Swansea at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, August 12. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
Southampton have been hamstrung by the Virgil van Dijk transfer saga for much of the summer. Rumors of the star center-back leaving the club started early, but Southampton held steadfast in keeping him. On Monday, Aug. 7, Van Dijk handed in his transfer request to the club. It seems increasingly likely that the 26-year-old will depart this summer. New manager Mauricio Pellegrino will have his hands full replacing arguably the club’s best player. He has only made two signings so far, most notably midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus. The Saints will be looking to continue their string of top half finishes for the upcoming season.
Swansea have also been through their own transfer saga this summer with their best player Gylfi Sigurdsson. Everton have been rumored to be in for the midfielder, but the Swans have not yet accepted an offer for. Manager Paul Clement, who rescued Swansea last season from relegation, will be hoping for a resolution soon, as a sale of this magnitude will mean major shake-ups in the squad. Clement has already added exciting young striker Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea and bought midfielder Roque Mesa as well, but needs more additions to ensure safety again.
