Romelu Lukaku scored on his Manchester United debut Sunday, giving his side the lead at Old Trafford against West Ham.
Manchester United’s record signing, Romelu Lukaku, got off to an excellent start at his new club, giving the Red Devils the lead against West Ham in the 33rd minute of his Premier League debut.
The goal came at the end of a rapid United counter-attack. Nemanja Matic played the ball to Marcus Rashford, whose through ball found Lukaku one-on-one with Joe Hart. The Belgian’s first-time finish rattled off the post before nestling in the opposite corner.
United dominated the opening exchanges against West Ham, but had struggled to get in behind the Hammers before Lukaku’s opener. The Belgian had missed his side’s best opportunity earlier, and had a decent shout for a penalty turned down on the same play, but otherwise had a relatively quiet match.

Jose Mourinho’s side are aiming to improve on a sixth-place finish last season, when 10 home draws undermined their challenge for the top four. In particular, they struggled to convert chances despite dominating most of their matches, so it will be a big boost to see Lukaku get off the mark so early.
They were able to salvage their season by winning the Europa League, but more will be expected this time in around. Mourinho, who has won the domestic league title in his second season at every club he’s managed, will demand a title challenge at the very least.

United will have been pleased to see many of their rivals struggle the day before. Liverpool drew with Watford, while title-holders Chelsea lost to Burnley. Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal all won, but if the Red Devils can win by more than two goals, they’ll finish the first weekend of the season ahead of all their main rivals.
