On Monday, WWE announced that the go-home SmackDown Live episode before SummerSlam on Sunday night would feature John Cena taking on WWE Champion Jinder Mahal in singles action.

With SummerSlam just mere days away, WWE has two go-home episodes of RAW and SmackDown Live before SummerSlam on Sunday night in Brooklyn and a big announcement surrounding John Cena and Jinder Mahal for Tuesday night should make matters interesting prior to the weekend.

WWE announced on Monday afternoon that John Cena will go one-on-one with WWE Champion Jinder Mahal in non-title singles action during Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown Live.

Cena, who has basically become Captain America since his return to WWE programming with matches against Rusev, Shinsuke Nakamura and now Mahal, could be set for his final match on the blue brand prior to SummerSlam. His schedule continues to get busier and busier out of the ring, hence the “free agent” label he’s been given.

Here’s the awesome Cathy Kelly with the announcement on the matchup set for Tuesday.

Regardless of Cena’s roster status in WWE, this is a pretty big deal with SummerSlam coming this weekend. Although he hasn’t been the most popular champion, Mahal is one of the most unlikely champions the company has ever seen and for him to get a shot at the company’s biggest star before the company’s second-biggest show of the year should make for some interesting television.

As for Cena, he might have to keep his eyes on not only The Singh Brothers at ringside, but Mr. Money in the Bank himself before SummerSlam. It’s safe to assume that Baron Corbin might have an influence on this match’s result on Tuesday night. SmackDown’s been a fun product in recent weeks and this match could contribute in that trend continuing.
