Getting the chance to catch Mewtwo on Pokemon GO will be invitation only.

On Sunday night, Mewtwo appeared in Pokemon GO for the first time in Yokohama, Japan during another official Pokemon GO event. With so many people in attendance, players were easily able to defeat the legendary Pokemon and afterward purportedly had up to 52 chances to catch it.

Now that Mewtwo has made his official Pokemon GO debut, Niantic has announced that he will indeed be making Raid Boss appearances all over the world in the coming weeks.

Mewtwo raids, however, are different from regular ones — they can only be joined via invitation. Players secure invitations by completing a prior Raid Battle at the same gym where Mewtwo eventually spawns.

“The invitations will include advance warning of when the Exclusive Raid will take place,” Niantic Labs stated in their official announcement, “giving them ample time to coordinate with other Trainers before taking on the powerful Raid Boss.”

Since there is currently no way to know the future raids in any given gym, this mechanic will force players who want Mewtwo to participate in as many Raid Battles across as many gyms as possible and then hope luck is in their favor.

While these extra steps may be a turn off to some, it’s extremely worth it to others as anyone who knows Pokemon knows how incredibly powerful Mewtwo is. One player who attended the Pokemon GO event in Japan has already caught a maxed out Mewtwo with a perfect move set, likely the first in the world.

Niantic has also announced that players will have some more time to catch the three legendary bird Pokemon — Articuno, Moltres and Zapados — as well as Lugia. They will be available once again from Aug. 14 to Aug. 31.
