Hoffenheim and Liverpool face off Tuesday in a Champions League playoff game. The Reds are coming off a 3-3 draw to Watford in their opening Premier League game. Hoffenheim are coming off a 1-0 German Cup victory over FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt.
Hoffenheim finished fourth in last year’s Bundesliga. They were only five points off second place and finished with an impressive 37 goals conceded as the second best defensive team in Germany. They only lost four games the entirety of the domestic season, second only to Bayern Munich.
Liverpool are fielding a roster lacking some of their key players due to injury, and in the case of Philippe Coutinho, other problems. Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Adam Lallana and Coutinho all miss out.
The Reds’ game against Watford was a classic Liverpool performance. Their offensive prowess was in full display in the second half of the 3-3 draw. Most noteworthy, their attack looked excellent despite missing Coutinho. However, the defensive mistakes that haunted Liverpool’s title run last season were also on full display, as they conceded from two corners, leaving players free in the six yard box both times. But the offensive ability that Jurgen Klopp’s team displayed much of last year was on full display. Their counter-attacking ball movement is still a thing of beauty.
