Michael Adams

PG, Boston College

No. 66 overall pick in 1985

1984-85 Boston College stats (Senior): 15.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists per game (Lost in Sweet 16 to Memphis)

Remember how I said shooting could overcome the size issue for Jackson? That’s why Adams is higher. At 5-foot-10, Adams is even more disadvantaged at the point, but his game translates so much better to the wide-open style of the NBA. The 1990-91 Denver Nuggets were ahead of their time with some of their concepts, and Adams proved to be at the forefront of that. Again, this was pre-college 3-point line, but he showed a propensity for the outside shot in college, and he became what would now be league-average from 3 on volume in the NBA, despite a wonky one-handed follow-through. His game would have greatly benefited from having the 3-point line from the jump.

There’s no way around it — Adams would be terrible on defense even today thanks to his size, and he was and will always be best-suited for an up-tempo system. But he had great court vision and was actually a pretty decent finisher, which would help to supplement what projects as a stronger outside shooting game. He wouldn’t become Isaiah Thomas, but he’s also not going to be Kay Felder, because he reads the game at a higher level and has that threat from outside. Both Jackson and Adams are probably just backup point guards in today’s game, but I like the ceiling of Adams more.
