The Yankees could be getting some much needed reinforcements next week.
The New York Yankees currently hold the first Wild Card spot, but they’re also in play for the division title. Lucky for them, reinforcements could be coming as early as next week. Yankees DH Matt Holliday and second baseman Starlin Castro are set to begin rehab assignments on Friday.
Holliday is headed to Class-A Tampa, and Castro will report to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
Holliday has been on the DL since Aug. 6 with a lumbar strain in his back, while Castro has been out since July 22nd after re-aggravating a hamstring injury in Chicago. Both of their imminent returns is fantastic news for the Yankees who really miss their bats.
Castro has hit the ball well all season, batting .307, and was one of the major league leaders in hits before his first hamstring injury. Holliday was also played a key role in the middle of the lineup providing protection for Aaron Judge during his incredible first half.

The Yankees really haven’t been at full strength for most of the season. They’ve had to deal with injuries to Greg Bird, Jacoby Ellsbury and Aaron Hicks for the majority of the season, and Clint Frazier is currently on the DL with an oblique injury.
Speaking of Bird, he’s currently on a rehab assignment after missing all but 19 games this year with an ankle injury that required surgery. He’s expected to join the Yankees next week as well.
The Yankees getting close to full strength as we approach September is probably the best news they could receive as they try and chase down the Red Sox in the American League East.
