Verona will face tough opposition in Napoli, who ended last season in third place in Serie A. Their top scorer last year was 33-year-old Giampaolo Pazzini, who they relied on for 23 goals. Verona’s leading assist man was Romulo, who is also north of 30. A youth-infusion may be necessary to keep them in the top flight.
Napoli are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They finished third in Serie A last season, only a point away from second place. The Light Blues boast a varied attack going forwards, with each of Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne, Jose Callejon and Marek Hamsik bagging 10 or more goals last season. This past Wednesday, they took a solid 2-0 home lead in the Champions League against Nice. An opening-day win against a newly promoted side in Verona should be an easier task. Both clubs ended their seasons with the most goals scored in their respective leagues, so a high-scoring affair could be on the cards.
