Manchester City drew 1-1 with Everton in the Premier League on Monday, Aug. 21. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Manchester City salvaged an impressive home draw against Everton on Monday, despite playing more than half the game a man down after Kyle Walker’s first-half red card.
There wasn’t much goalmouth action of note in the first half hour, as City controlled possession and Everton looked to play through Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the break. The best chance fell to Sergio Aguero, who couldn’t finish the rebound after Nicolas Otamendi’s shot was saved by Jordan Pickford.
Aguero had his side’s best chance of the half less than 10 minutes later, but chose not to shoot when played through by Kevin De Bruyne, giving Phil Jagielka enough time to make a recovery tackle.
With City beginning to pick up a head of steam, Everton took the lead. Leroy Sane was pressured into a sloppy pass in his own half which was collected by Mason Holgate, who played in Calvert-Lewin. The 20-year-old beat Vincent Kompany on the dribble before passing to Wayne Rooney to finish for his 200th goal in the Premier League.
Things got even worse for City in the 44th minute, when Walker was sent off for a second yellow card for bumping Calvert-Lewin while jostling for a header. It seemed like a harsh call, but Walker did appear to look at his opponent before barging into him.
City responded remarkably well considering. Raheem Sterling came on for Gabriel Jesus at halftime, as City continued to dominate the ball even a man down. Everton were happy to sit back and defend their lead, but the home side looked more and more dangerous as the half progressed, and Pep Guardiola brought on Danilo and Bernardo Silva.
They eventually found a way through in the 83rd minute, when Sterling volleyed home after a botched clearance by Holgate. There was still enough time for Everton to be reduced to 10 men, as Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off for a second yellow of his own, but the match ended all square.
