NFL power rankings: Head coaches from 32-1
No. 27: Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns
Jackson is the latest head coach tasked with pulling the Browns out of the “Factory of Sadness” doldrums, and a 1-15 mark in his first season was not a good start. But a new, somewhat analytics driven front office seems to have things going on a better track, and owner Jimmy Haslam may finally be getting patient enough to give Jackson some time to see a rebuilding project through.
But this is the Browns, and another incredibly bad season record-wise would make it tough for Jackson to keep his job. A playoff berth can’t be a realistic requirement, but three wins or less and/or a lack of notable progress from young players on the offensive side of the ball would be a black mark for Jackson, who came to Cleveland after being an offensive coordinator for the division rival Bengals.
If Jackson does not last to a third season as Browns’ head coach, it shouldn’t be a detriment to his coaching career. He also only lasted only one season as head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2011, when that franchise was down, so maybe Jackson is just meant to be an offensive coordinator. Or maybe the third time as an NFL head coach will be the charm if things don’t last with the Browns.
