Rooney scores 200th Premier League goal against Manchester City
Wayne Rooney joined an elite club Monday, scoring his 200th Premier League goal against Manchester City.
After breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s scoring record at Manchester United last season by scoring his 250th goal for his now former club, Wayne Rooney has once again etched his name into the record books.
The Everton forward scored his 200th Premier League goal against Manchester City, becoming only the second player in league history to do so after Alan Shearer. Shearer wasted no time in congratulating the 31-year-old as he took to Twitter to record a special video message:
Rooney tucked the ball between City goalkeeper Ederson’s legs after converting a nifty cutback pass from Dominic Calvert-Lewin within the penalty area. A poor defensive showing by Pep Guardiola’s troops had them chasing Everton, who were up 1-0:
Rooney rejoined his boyhood club on a free transfer this summer after falling out of favor with United manager Jose Mourinho last season and is already making his mark felt by scoring his second goal in as many appearances thus far in the 2017-2018 season. He is expected to play a significantly more prominent role for an Everton team that is looking to finish amongst the top-four in the league.

His addition is already a welcomed one on the attacking forefront. Everton boss Ronald Koeman sold prolific scorer Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United and has wasted no time in inserting Rooney into his starting XI as a forward against both Stoke City on August 12th and his former Manchester rival on Monday, Aug. 21.
Everton will line up against Hajduk Split on Thursday in Europa League qualifiers and are set to take on Premier League reigning champions Chelsea next Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
