Ben Simmons takes the court in Australia and impresses against rec league competition.

Ben Simmons has yet to play a meaningful NBA game. The 2016 No. 1 overall pick missed all of last year with a broken foot and has only played in a handful of Summer League contests.

In order to get back up to speed during the summer, Simmons went back home to Australia, where he found a rec. league game to join in.

It’s nice to see Simmons moving well. He shows off his length and athleticism with a couple of dunks and tough finishes around the rim. He also exhibits some good footwork on a spin move and his vision with a nice dump off.

It helps that he’s nearly a foot taller than the guys he is playing against, guys who were probably locked in a 10-8 game after 20 minutes before Simmons entered. But he couldn’t find a game more his own size? Getting excited over this footage is like MMA fans getting excited over the 10-second clips of Conor McGregor sparring Paulie Malignaggi. It’s nice that he’s showing something, but we’re talking about two different levels here.

The good news is that these guys seem to love and respect Simmons. They are nicely moving out of his way and not celebrating with him too much after cool dunks. They know how fragile he is and want to make sure that he actually plays this year. Except that one guy at around the 40-second mark. He gets a little too close.

This is where Simmons high basketball IQ really shines. It’s not his vision and passing ability that makes him a smart player. It’s his ability to recognize that he needs to stay healthy during the summer so he joins a rec league game.
