The 18th-ranked Miami Hurricanes have named Malik Rosier as their starting quarterback.

The Miami Hurricanes enter the 2017 college football season ranked 18th in the country. Their highest pre-season rating since 2010.

A big question facing the Canes was replacing three year starter and current Detroit Lion Brad Kaaya. Kaaya started since the minute he arrived on campus as a true freshman and 5-star recruit.

The Hurricanes and coach Mark Richt, after watching two inter-team scrimmages have decided to go with Kaaya’s backup the last two years, Malik Rosier, per Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports. Rosier will be under center when the Canes face Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 2.

Rosier arrived in Miami as a 3-star quarterback as part of Al Golden’s recruiting class. He was stuck behind Kaaya the last two years as a backup. The talented quarterback was given reps in only two games last year, throwing four passes. In 2015, he took over for the injured Kaaya and in some garbage time, throwing 58 passes.

While Rosier may be raw, he was around last year to learn Mark Richt’s offense, which seemingly gave him a leg up on his competition, which included 4-star freshman N’Kosi Perry.

Perry came to campus the eighth-ranked QB by Rivals.com in his class. Miami fans were clamoring for the dual threat quarterback to start the first game after the YouTube highlights show him looking like a young Michael Vick.

The talent around Rosier will help ease the transition into the starting role. Miami is loaded with talented skill players. Two offensive weapons earned preseason All-ACC honors; wide receiver Ahmmon Richards and running back Mark Walton.

Richt and his staff will also lean on a talented defense, anchored by preseason All-ACC linebacker Shaq Quarterman. The front four goes five or six players deep and finished 5th nationally in tackles for loss.

Rosier will look to lead the Hurricanes to an ACC championship for the first time since they joined the conference. Richt’s has shown ability to mentor and showcase quarterbacks. His coaching and the team surrounding Rosier have Canes fans excited for the season.
