Borussia Dortmund and Hertha Berlin both opened their Bundesliga seasons with wins. Dortmund defeated Wolfsburg 3-0, while Hertha beat Stuttgart 2-0. The two teams will face off in Dortmund on Saturday.
Peter Bosz debut as Dortmund manager went well, as his side cruised to an easy 3-0 win. American Christian Pulisic got off to an excellent start to the season, scoring a goal and adding an assist on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal. Already one of the best offensive teams in the Bundesliga, Dortmund could be even better with a healthy Mario Gotze. Gotze missed the majority of last season with a metabolic illness but played well in 61 minutes.
Hertha could not have asked for a better debut from Mathew Leckie, who scored a brace. Leckie moved to Berlin this summer from Ingolstadt after they were relegated. Hertha still reliy on Vedad Ibisevic and Salomon Kalou offensively; the duo combined for 19 goals and 11 assists last season. However, both players are in their early 30s, and the emergence of Leckie would be a positive sign for Pal Dardai’s side. Defensively, full-backs Marvin Plattenhardt and Mitchell Weiser are strengths for the team but Hertha are weaker in the middle after selling American John Brooks to Wolfsburg. Niklas Stark and Sebastian Langkamp will be tested by an explosive Dortmund attack.
