U.S. Open 2017: When does it start?

The 2017 U.S. Open will begin in New York City this week and will run through the middle of September. When does the fourth tennis major begin in New York?

After several weeks since a thrilling ending at Wimbledon in London in July, the 2017 U.S. Open will be under way in New York City this week. This will be 137th playing of this major tennis tournament. When does it all begin?

While they are having qualifiers in the days leading up to it, the 2017 U.S. Open begins its first-round slate of matches on Monday, Aug. 28. It will be played at the UTSA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The fourth major tennis tournament of the year will run through Sunday, Sep. 10.

This is always one of the toughest of the Grand Slam events to play in. It takes place towards the end of summer in the United States. The temperature is incredibly high and the courts are incredibly fast with it being a hard court.

Last year saw Stan Wawrinka and Angelique Kerber win the 136th playings of the tennis tournament. While neither has won any of the three Grand Slams this season, both have played well at stretches this year. They definitely have the ability to defending their titles in New York.

Two of tennis’ most popular players will not be playing. This will be the third major tournament Serena Williams will miss due to her pregnancy. Men’s phenom Novak Djokovic has had surgery and will be out the rest of the season. Hopefully he can be back in time for next year’s Australian Open.

The two players that won in Wimbledon in Roger Federer and Garbine Muguruza should be in contention to win this tournament as well. Ferderer looked youthful against Marin Cilic in the gentlemen’s finals in Wimbledon. Muguruza was able to win another Grand Slam by outlasting Venus Williams on grass in London.
