Hurricane Harvey is having a major effect on the college football schedule, as a game between BYU and LSU is likely to be moved away from Houston.

For months we waited, anticipated yet another exciting, action-packed college football season. And here comes Mother Nature, barreling through without any regard for football or its fans. As Hurricane Harvey continues to wreak havoc in Texas, affecting the lives of millions with its near record-breaking flooding, one of the many plans being changed is the Saturday night kickoff between LSU and BYU, which was scheduled for 9:30 p.m. in NRG Stadium in Houston.

According to The Advocate, there are several options for alternative sites to host the game, including the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Another option would be for LSU to host it in Baton Rouge. However, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva released a statement on Sunday through administrator Bill Franques, deflecting the decision away from the LSU athletics department.

A formal announcement is expected to come on Monday. LSU is no stranger to having games moved or postponed due to weather events, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less of a distraction or problem for the team. Granted, they are all safe and not directly impacted by the serious flooding in Houston. Having said that, the sooner they know where they are playing, the sooner they will be able to adjust and plan for that.

The college game isn’t the only level being affected. Hurricane Harvey has also stopped the Houston Texans from returning home, as they’ll remain in Dallas to prepare for their Week 4 preseason game against the Cowboys.

After a long summer without football, this is the last thing fans need right now. On a more serious note, let’s hope the good people in Texas can get through this quickly and safely. After all, football doesn’t really matter if that last part doesn’t come true.
