Liverpool will face Arsenal Sunday in the first big matchup this season for either side. Both teams have dropped points against clubs they should have beaten in the first two weeks. Liverpool drew with Watford on opening day, and Arsenal lost to Stoke just last week. This is a vital litmus test for both Jurgen Klopp and Arsene Wenger. Both men expect to compete for a Premier League title, and at the very least a top four finish.
Liverpool have been typical Liverpool thus far in their campaign, offensively electric and defensively inconsistent. In stopping Arsenal they’ll need to do a much better job at controlling the deep midfield. Jordan Henderson is a brilliant central midfielder, but his ability to command a defense isn’t his greatest strength.
Despite maintaining more than three-quarters of the possession against Stoke, Arsenal still only had two more shots on target than the Potters. It was an odd performance that saw Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka play really well in the midfield, but they just couldn’t capitalize in the final third. Arsenal have a great chance to capitalize on Liverpool’s defense. A second straight loss wouldn’t be acceptable.
