Due to the extreme damage caused by Hurricane Harvey recently, the University of Houston has either cancelled or postponed sporting events for the upcoming weekend.
Everyone’s thoughts and prayers this week are with the folks in Houston, Texas, who are unfortunately dealing with the horrid damage that has been caused by Hurricane Harvey recently. When it comes to a life-changing event such as this, other not-nearly-as-important aspects of life need to be put on the back burner, and that is exactly what the University of Houston is doing.
In a press release on Tuesday, the University of Houston announced either the cancellation or postponement of several sporting events that were set to take place over the weekend. The Houston Cougars football program was scheduled to open up their 2017 college football season this weekend in Week 1 by traveling to UT-San Antonio, but in the release it was announced the game has been postponed and both sides will work on rescheduling the game for some time later this season.
In addition to the football opener being postponed, cross country, soccer and volleyball outings that were set to take place over the weekend have been cancelled as everyone down in Houston deals with this unfortunate conditions in their city currently.
“Everyone in our university community, including our student-athletes, coaches and their staff, has been impacted by this incredible storm. This is a time for all of us to focus on the wellbeing of our families and neighbors and the recovery of the Houston area,” University of Houston President Renu Khator as part of his statement in the release. “We’ll be excited to resume athletic competition, but right now our student-athletes are anxious to contribute to getting the city we love so much back on its feet again.”
