The Detroit Lions locked up their franchise quarterback through the 2022 NFL season, inking Matthew Stafford to a five-year extension.
Heading into the 2017 NFL season, the Detroit Lions made sure they locked up their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. Detroit signed quarterback Matthew Stafford to a five-year extension on Monday night, in a deal that will keep him in a Lions uniform through 2022. Stafford has been one of the more productive quarterbacks since coming into the league, most recently leading his team to a Wild Card spot last season.
Staying with the quarterbacks, the New York Jets finally named a starter for Week 1. Veteran Josh McCown beat out youngsters Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg this summer in one of the worst QB competitions in recent memory. Petty actually looked good in garbage time, though he was injured last time out, and Hackenberg has proven to be one of the worst second-round picks in recent memory.
Paxton Lynch lost his own QB battle to Trevor Siemian this summer for the second year in a row, and now will miss time due to injury. Lynch injured his shoulder this past weekend, and with limited depth behind him, the time may reach out to former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Despite having decent numbers as a starter last season, Kaepernick is still out of work, but it’s looking increasingly possible he could be signed before the end of the summer.
Due to the horrific weather situation in Houston, Texas, the Week 4 preseason matchup between the Texans and Dallas Cowboys will be moved to Dallas, Texas. Hurricane Harvey has decimated the Houston area, bringing in unprecedented flooding. Texans players have rallied around the city, including star defensive end J.J. Watt, whose funding page can be found here. The page has already accepted more than $1 million in donations.

Finally, the Baltimore Ravens gave John Harbaugh some breathing room. With his contract set to expire after the 2018 NFL season, the Ravens locked up Harbaugh to a one-year extension. Harbaugh led the Ravens to a title in Super Bowl XXXV, though the team has failed to make the playoffs since the 2014 NFL season.
