2. LSU Tigers

Rank: 13, Opponent: BYU

The LSU Tigers are entering their first full season with Ed Orgeron on the sidelines and there’s reason to be hopeful. With Derrius Guice replacing Leonard Fournette, the running game should be one of the best in the country. What’s more, this is a program that has churned out one elite defensive player after another, and defensive end Arden Key figures to be a part of that is well. In an ideal world, you could see the Tigers in the College Football Playoff.

However, this is also an LSU team that is susceptible to some sort of growing pains. With this new regime coming in on the sidelines, there are several changes. Perhaps the most notable is Matt Canada taking over as offensive coordinator. For the long haul, this is likely a good change. Though LSU has struggled to find stability at quarterback, Canada should help the program find ways to both recruit and succeed.

With that being said, though, Danny Etling doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence, or at least he didn’t when on the field last season. Subsequently, it’s not hard to imagine him coming out of the gates early and struggling to adapt to Canada’s system right away. As talented as Guice is, he’s going to be hampered if there’s no semblance of a passing game. And against an always dangerous BYU team, that could mean an 0-1 start to the season.
