Detroit Tigers: Jeimer Candelario

The Tigers have four top-100 prospects, but the only one who is knocking on the door this season is Jeimer Candelario, who was acquired from the Cubs for Justin Wilson and Alex Avila at the deadline. In Chicago, Candelario was blocked by Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. He will only have to beat out Nick Castellanos to win a starting job in Detroit next year — not quite as difficult a task.

Candelario could have already been a starter in the big leagues for several of the rebuilding teams. His swing is smooth from both sides of the plate and he has a good eye. Power will eventually come as he continues to grow into his body. His doubles will begin leaving the yard as he continues to add strength. Candelario has the body type that may require a move to first base in the future, but for now his feet are quick enough to play the hot corner. He also has a strong arm.

The Cubs had Candelario up for a brief stretch in July and he hit .152/.222/.303 with two doubles and a home run. Castellanos is having an unspectacular year with 18 home runs and an OPS+ of 94. He is still only 25, but Candelario has the higher upside. In this lost season, the Tigers need to give Candelario a look in September.

Detroit will be playing out the string in the final month of the year, so there will be prospects galore getting playing time with an eye on better things in 2018. Christin Stewart may get a chance for his MLB debut, reliever Joe Jimenez should be called back up and toolsy outfielder JaCoby Jones may also get another chance after struggling to start the year.
