Houston Astros: A.J. Reed

The Astros are in a tough place with their prospect situation heading into September. They could use a few live arms to help boost the bullpen or rotation down the stretch and a trade for Justin Verlander does not appear to be in the cards. Two of their top pitching prospects, Jandel Gustave and David Paulino are done for the year. Paulino was popped with an 80-game suspension for PEDs while Gustave had season-ending surgery.

Houston’s MLB hitters do not need much help, which is good since there isn’t much help that will be ready for an immediate impact this year. Colin Moran had looked like a solid power bat off the bench before shattering his face with a foul ball. Top prospect Kyle Tucker and Daz Cameron are at least a year away and Derek Fisher is already up.

A.J. Reed and Tyler White are the remaining “tweener” prospects who could offer the Astros a power source off the bench. Both have had cups of coffee with the MLB club and profile as three-true-outcome players in the big leagues.

Reed and White are essentially the same player — plodding 1B/DH types with plenty of power and strikeouts. Reed is the younger of the pair and may have more of a future with the Astros. Houston can go either way here, but Reed has more long-term upside.
