New York Mets: Robert Gsellman

The Mets are only running the risk of further injury by calling anyone up to end the 2017 season with the MLB club. It’s been that type of year for the Amazins. With top hitting prospects Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith finally taking their places on the 25-man roster, the Mets have limited options when it comes to prospects ready to make the leap to the big leagues.

After taking a beating at the hands of the Washington Nationals to fall to 5-6 on the year with a 5.60 ERA, Robert Gsellman was sent back to Triple-A. After a promising debut with the Mets last fall, Gsellman has been one of the biggest disappointments on a team filled with disappointments.

Gsellman went 4-2 as a rookie in eight games with a solid 2.42 ERA and only allowed one home run in 44.2 innings of work. It was bad from the beginning this season, however. Gsellman ended April 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA. He went 0-3 with a 7.07 ERA in the six starts leading up to his demotion.

The tall right-hander has obvious potential, but a move to the bullpen may be in his future if he cannot figure out how to go through a lineup multiple times. Even with his struggles this year, the Mets still need to recall Gsellman at some point in September after the Triple-A season ends. The futures of Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler, and even Noah Syndergaard to a certain extent are all still up in the air.
