New York Yankees: Jordan Montgomery

Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is down in the minor leagues cooling his heels and awaiting a return to the big leagues. The Yankees rookie was impressive at times so far this year, posting a 7-6 record and 4.00 ERA in 23 starts. Workload is not a concern, as he is still under the 139.1 innings thrown last year.

Montgomery was the odd man out in the rotation shuffle after the Yankees acquired Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia at the deadline. His presence was also not needed in the bullpen after David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle came in with Todd Frazier from the White Sox. With the shackles of the 25-man roster stripped away for the final month, however, expect Montgomery to be back with the Yankees as soon as possible.

The rookie has pitched almost exclusively as a starter since the Yankees drafted him out of South Carolina in 2014, but that does not mean he would be ineffective as a reliever. Left-handed batters hit a paltry .209/.284/.418 against Montgomery in his first stint with the Yankees. The potential to match him up for a platoon advantage as the playoff race heats up has to be attractive to Joe Girardi.

Montgomery could also very well steal his job back from Garcia, who has struggled so far after being acquired from the Twins. The veteran left-hander has a 5.95 ERA in his first four starts for the Yankees.
