Boston Red Sox: Sam Travis

The Red Sox already have their big impact call-up producing at the MLB level in Rafael Devers. The farm is more bare now than it was at this point last season thanks to more trade magic from Dealin’ Davey Dombrowski, but the Red Sox should have at least one more prospect with the potential to help in a pennant race in September. The AL East title does not look quite as set in stone after the Red Sox were swept by the Orioles last weekend.

Hanley Ramirez has been killing the Red Sox in the second half, hitting .210/.301/.384 in the second half with little to no run production. The 33-year-old DH has not been able to carry over his strong 2016 season. Hitting behind David Ortiz in his magical final season helped hide the fact that Ramirez is entering the steep downward arc of his career and has some real holes as a hitter at this stage of his career.

September may be the month the Red Sox attempt to begin phasing out Ramirez for next year. His option for 2020 vests if he tops 1,050 plate appearances in 2017 and 2018 combined. Ramirez is at 465 as of August 28. Boston can be sneaky about how they do it, but it is in their best interest to curtail the number of plate appearances their DH gets the rest of the year.

Sam Travis has already made his MLB debut for Boston this year and hit well in an 18-game cameo. Travis hit .278/.380/.395 with five doubles. He has a strong grip of the strike zone and smart approach at the plate. Travis was a teammate of Kyle Schwarber at Indiana University, and while the Red Sox won’t be getting Shwarber-esque power out of Travis, he has the potential to be a very solid contact hitter as soon as he re-arrives in the big leagues.
