Neymar, Kylian Mbappe – Paris Saint-Germain

If AC Milan were toying with Financial Fair play by signing all of their new players, then Paris Saint-Germain are simply laughing in their face.

Of course, signing two of the best young forwards in the world would normally be seen as a terrific move. And, on the pitch at least, that’s exactly what it is. PSG are already running wild in Ligue 1, and Neymar has three goals and three assists while completely out-classing and often embarrassing the competition. The addition of Kylian Mbappe to an already star-studded strike force, still featuring Edinson Cavani, is just absurd. PSG will have the title locked up by November.

Of course, that’s not the issue here. If Financial Fair Play did not exist, there would be no issues. But alas, it still does, and it applies to every club in Europe.

In all likelihood, if PSG are handed down any sanctions from UEFA or FIFA, it won’t happen any time soon. The rules are convoluted and can be worked around, as PSG seemingly did with the Mbappe transfer. They structured the deal as a loan move with the option to buy next season, thereby not having the gigantic €180 million payout on the books this year.

PSG sold less than €55 million in the summer window and spent over €200 million, which means, by the deal with Neymar alone, they are in trouble with FFP unless they again skirt the rules. That’s entirely possible. If not, then the club could be facing some big time sanctions. Either way, someone, UEFA or PSG, is going to look very dumb at the end of all this.
