Georgia will be without their starting quarterback Jacob Eason when they head to South Bend.

The Georgia Bulldogs come into every season with high expectations, and this season was no exception. Ranked 15th to start the season Georgia was a favorite in the SEC East, but that might have taken a hit as quarterback Jacob Eason is now out for the foreseeable future with a knee injury.

Eason suffered the injury in the first quarter of Georgia’s matchup with Appalachian State. Eason took a late hit out of bounds, and landed awkwardly, going down in a heap. Head coach Kirby Smart has already ruled him out next week against Notre Dame, but said he will return this season.

Eason’s replacement is another five-star quarterback, Jake Fromm. Fromm entered the game after Eason’s injury and led UGA to a 31-10 victory over Appalachian State. Fromm finished the game 10-of-15 with 143 yards and a touchdown. Not a bad debut for the true freshman.

Eason and Fromm battled it out during spring practice for the starting job before Eason was named the starter during spring practice. Make no mistake though, Fromm may be just as good as Eason.

Georgia will miss Eason’s big game experience this week. Going on the road to South Bend is no walk in the park, and Fromm will be tested both mentally and physically. Luckily for him he has one of the best backfields in the country with Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

Smart will most likely do everything he can to make sure Fromm isn’t put in a position that he can’t handle. Georgia rushed for 221 yards on 44 carries against Appalachian State and they only threw the ball 20 times. Expect more of the same, especially on the road in a hostile environment against Notre Dame. Chubb and Michel will be leaned on heavily until Eason returns.
