We’ve been anxiously awaiting the start of the NFL’s 98th season and we’re finally on the verge of some meaningful football. It all begins this Thursday night as the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots look to become the first team to repeat as Lombardi Trophy winners since their franchise turned the trick in 2003 and ’04.

This week’s opposition is the defending AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs. Andy Reid’s club comes off a 12-4 season and the franchise’s first division title since 2010.

TV: NBC

Time: 8:30 pm ET

Broadcasters: Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, Michele Tafoya

It’s a meeting between the AFC’s top two playoff seeds from a year ago. Of course, the Patriots went onto win Super Bowl LI. Meanwhile, Reid and company were surprised at home by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round. The Chiefs still have not won a Super Bowl since the final season of the AFL in 1969.

Odds

Line: Patriots (-8)

Over/Under: 47.5

Thanks to the fine folks at SportsBook Review, the Pats open as a touchdown favorite.

Keep this in mind as the Patriots kick off 2017 in this primetime meeting. Defending Super Bowl champions are a healthy 34-15-1 in their first game of the following season. That includes a 15-2 mark dating back to 1999. This is a tall order for Reid and company, to say the least.

Pick: Patriots 31, Chiefs 16
